Manchester, CT, USA - A man has been charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief after removing the batteries from the smoke detector in his apartment, police said.
The man was issued a misdemeanor summons on the charge on March 2, 2001.
Firefighters went to his apartment building on March 2, 2001, after getting a report of smoke in the building, police said. The smoke was coming from his apartment, where firefighters found burnt food on the stove, police said.
When asked why his smoke detector lacked batteries, he said he had just moved into the apartment and removed them after finding the detector wasn't working, police said.
He said he thought his landlord was responsible for replacing the batteries, police said, adding firefighters made sure the smoke detector was working before they left.
